Personal Feelings about Mel Gibson Aside, Apocalypto Was a Stunning Achievement in Filmmaking

I was recently re-watching this film and thinking....how was Gibson not at least nominated for a Best Directing Oscar? Or Dean Semler for cinematography? To me it seems certainly like it got snubbed from the 2007 Oscars, and makes me wonder if this were held against Gibson for his personal remarks over the years. But this film is truly stunning. Shooting on location in Mexican jungles, constructing an accurate replica of a Mayan village for the unforgettable city ritual scenes, hiring all those extras and ensuring they had the correct clothes, body/face paint, jewelry, etc. Rudy Youngblood, playing Jaguar Paw, is alarmingly athletic and watching him float through the jungle like it's an open plain is truly something to behold. There is a 25 min "making of" documentary on Youtube that is very worthwhile, and shows just how much went in to making this absolute epic of a movie. Yeah, I wish Mel Gibson would quit being an idiot and realize what he's said is totally inappropriate, but damn he has poured himself in to some great directorial works over the years and has taken us to some historically epic times and told great stories IMO. via /r/movies http://bit.ly/2WZXs7Y
