“First Reformed” was written and directed by Paul Schrader. Schrader’s past works include scripts for: “Taxi Driver”, “Raging Bull”, & “The Last Temptation of Christ”.This film is one of the best of the year, and it was my favorite film of the year for a very long time as well. It seems that everything in this film is done perfectly. The performances, cinematography, and the story are all top notch. Ethan Hawke spear heads the film with easily the best performance of the year, and the best performance I’ve seen out of Hawke as of now. The film is a grounded analysis on the power that Faith has, and what it’s like to loose it, and possibly weaponize it. The film is s bleak character study on a troubled pastor that asks himself whether or not he’s using his position for the greater good?
