Is there any movie ruined due to the director having too much creative freedom?

We love to talk about the opposite (movie failing due to producers meddling with the edit, script, casting...), but what about having too much leeway and that resulting in a pretentious self-indulging mess? In what cases you think a bit of oversight would have helped a film? I thought of this while watching the Nicolas Winding Refn series “Too Old To Die Young”, which has many great elements but the end result was a boring mess. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/3lqXGnb
