I saw Waterworld for the first time and enjoyed it. Why did it have so much hate?

It definitely wasn't perfect at all, but I found it fun to watch and really enjoyed the world. There were elements that I thought were a bit too close to Mad Max 2, like: the selfish main character, balloon guy (similar to Gyro captain), the "smokers" seemed a lot like the Lord Humungus's raiders... but I guess that comes with a post-apocolyptic movie.I actually didn't know there was hate for it until after I finished watching it.
