Eastern Promises (2007) - made me cry

I just watched this on Prime. The film stars Naomi Watts and Vigo Mortensen so it's already got some heavy hitting dramatic casting. I went into it expecting something completely different; action packed violence, minimal plot, and no emotional resonance. Apparently I was living under a rock because within the first few minutes, the film elicited something films rarely do from me - a powerful feeling of sadness that brings on some tears. That's not to say that the film is all bleak - although a film about a midwife having a run in with the Russian mafia is likely to be just that - it is interspersed with gallows humor, action, and even a small bit of tasteful romance.I will warn you, there are graphic depictions of drugs and their effects, violence against women, and a lot of blood both inside and outside of the maternity ward. All of this serves to move the plot forward and none felt gratuitous. Uncomfortable and painful to view at times but necessary.Unlike countless other films that depicts Russians generally and Russian mafia specifically as two dimensional, brutal baddies, Eastern Promises paints a detailed and well studied picture of life in that world, complete with organizational challenges, nepotism, and the history and culture of Russian prison tattoos.I don't want to give too much away about the plot. I am glad I was living under a rock because the movie affected me so much more not knowing what I was getting myself into. If the climax doesn't cause something to stir in your heart, please seek therapy. I felt so many conflicting feelings it reminded me of being dumped in high school.Great film I give it 4.5 out of 5 points. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/3ArQOKz
