Bond and Vesper's romance in Casino Royale is amongst the best in a franchise film.

SPOILERS BELOW FOR CASINO ROYALE AND QUANTUM OF SOLACE:You don't get epic romances supported by big budgets these days. The franchise films today do have love stories, but mostly in the background. One of my favorite love stories in a franchise film comes from James Bond surprisingly. I am talking about the relationship between Bond and Vesper in Casino Royale (2006). There are 3 things a good love story requires imho:1) The reason the characters fall in love. Here it makes a lot of sense. Both Bond and Vesper have to act as if they are a couple in love and together go through a tense few days in the villain's den at the casino. They are both attractive people and Vesper's charming personality along with her display of humanity (her scene in the shower cabin washing off the blood contrasted with Bond's display of zero emotion despite having killed a guy moments earlier) makes Bond fall for her over time.2) Tension. If you fall in love and live happily ever after as everything goes smoothly, that doesn't make a very compelling story. There are 2 things at play here: one is Bond's duty towards his mission and his agency which won't allow him to settle down. Secondly, towards the end we realize there is something off about Vesper. The final reveal of Vesper's actual identity and story is a great surprise and keeps you on the edge. It's a complicated affair with a few twists and turns which makes their story memorable.3) Impact on the characters. Vesper's impact on Bond is enormous. First, he is willing to give up his job for Vesper. That is a pretty big deal since Bond's loyalty to his country and agency is one of his defining traits. Secondly, the whole premise of Quantum rests on Vesper's death. Bond, despite calling her a bitch at the end of CR and seemingly unaffected, is really hurt by her death and is out for some serious revenge. I don't think we have ever seen Bond this angry and disturbed before. How do you find this arc and what other love stories from a franchise film is your favorite? via /r/movies https://ift.tt/2PtaOdY
