I didn't even know about this film until it got nominated for 2 golden globes for Best Picture- Musical or Comedy (seriously?) and best actress for Kate Hudson.I went in with an open mind and tried to ignore all the hateful reviews, but after having watched it, I'm just wondering "why?" and "what was Sia thinking?" There are bad movies with the best intentions, but I'm not even sure the best intentions were involved here.I don't blame the actors. Maddie Ziegler's performance is obviously over the top, but it seems she only did this because of Stockholm syndrome indebted to Sia who seems to be her legal guardian now. There's a reason she's not speaking up about it. For the record, her autistic character 'Music', is barely the focus of the film after the first half-hour. She's always "around", and pops up in the music videos (sorry, musical numbers) but she's mostly forgotten about. This isn't her story at all, which is slightly ironic.Kate Hudson does her best and isn't even that bad, but when is she going to get a new agent? Ever since she was nominated for Almost Famous, which remains an incandescent and unforgettable performance, she has since driven her reputation into the ground. I'm sure when she signed up for this she thought its sia! it's about autistic people! I'll be playing against type as an addict with a buzz cut!" she's fine in the role. But seems a bit lost. Doing her best with limited material. But really this is Sia's fault. It's obvious she knows nothing about being autistic or caring for someone living with it. She threw tantrums when people threw backlash at her. It seems more like a platform to get more of her songs and music videos out rather than an actual story. The way she handles the characters and themes is so clunky and misguided. She tries tackling addiction, autism, abuse, murder and seems to think if she just turns it into a music video that somehow that's transcendent and has meaning. When we aren't given enough from the characters to really care or understand why the fuck we are supposed to be involved in any given moment.I'm just completely baffled by this film. It's irresponsible and cheap, and Sia is totally out of her grasp. I'm not sure why this got any nominations. It's not even worth watching in a 'trainwreck' way, it's just a total forgettable mess that is somewhat dangerous to the autistic community. But at least she gives herself a cameo? This really should have just stayed on the shelves like it had been, gathering dust. Again the fact it got any nominations is totally confusing. Sia needs to get her ego checked. Such a disappointment and a total failure.I'm just wondering how other people in the autism community, or who understand it, feels about this glorified music video? via /r/movies https://ift.tt/3drxSDj
