Park Chan-wook's The Handmaiden (2016) is one of my favourite movies from the past decade

In an effort to draw attention to a movie that isn't one of the same 50 films this sub talks about constantly, I want to sing some praise of The Handmaiden. This movie is beautiful. Kouzuki's estate is stunning, the cherry blossom tree, the reading room, Hideko's bedroom, are all examples of phenomenal set design. The costumes and how the characters appear are great and I will always remember the shot of Kouzuki sticking out his black, ink-covered tongue. One thing I love as someone who has only seen a handful of Korean films is that all the actors are new to me. I've never seen a move with Kim Tae-ri before or since, so I can view her just as a pickpocket working as a maid and not an actor who I am overly familiar with. But the best part of the film is the story. The initial hook is that Kim Tae-ri's character gets sent to Kouzuki's estate to aid in a plot, but there is so much more happening that the characters and the audience learn about at different times. The movie is sort of like Knives Out in that way, where there is non-linear storytelling and the audience's perception of character's motivations changes as the film goes on. There are lines which feel like to pointless chatter when they are first uttered that take on a whole new meaning as the film progresses.I love this movie. It's my favourite Korean film and one of my favourite foreign films. I want to bring some attention to it, to foster discussion and introduce it to new people. I would love if this sub could talk about it and movies like this more, instead of rehashing the same conversations about Starship Troopers and Edge of Tomorrow each week. It's a shame that this movie was never nominated for best foreign picture. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/2MEnJVm
