For me, the most glaring example has always been "Highlander." Whatever you may think of its merits, the first "Highlander's" end is definitive. There is only one, the Prize has been won, our protagonist is happy and content, there's no more story to tell. And then we get "Highlander 2" where they're revealed as aliens and...yeah, there's no coming back from that. That's why I enjoy the original and ignore the entire rest of the franchise.
