The Last Samurai (2003) is fantastic

Just rewatched this movie for the first time in a couple years and I remembered just how much I love this film.Very well-written and directed (Zwick is great here), the film has a phenomenal performance from Ken Watanabe and it's one of Cruise's best performances. It has one of the best soundtracks of this century, before Zimmer fell in love with the BWAHHs, and it's one of the last R rated historical war flicks that became a huge hit.I can kind of understand why a lot of critics and audiences may have had issues with it. It's another film with a white dude that becomes a part of a foreign culture and then "saves" them. I think that that's a very surface level understanding of the film. The Last Samurai refers to the group of Samurai and most of the emotional backbone of the film comes from the Japanese actors. It doesn't paint Cruise's character as a saviour, barring maybe one or two questionable lines of dialogue, and the ending is incredibly emotional and heartfelt.I don't know, I just love this movie. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/2NWBWgC
