It’s a shame the Oscar race for supporting actor is so stacked this year, because in another year I think Shia could take it for playing his own abusive father in Honey Boy

I thought Honey Boy was a pretty solid film, but more than anything I was blown away by Shia’s sensational performance. When I first heard Shia was playing his abusive dad in a script he wrote, it sounded like stunt casting. But seeing the film, i’m not sure it could’ve been done by anyone else. Shia plays him with the kind of complexity and strained empathy that only someone who was victimized by this figure for years could tap into. He’s truly unrecognizable in the role, and not even physically- his whole demeanor and presence takes on this dark, volatile nature that plays off all of Shia’s strengths as an actor and puts them to intense, often disturbing use. It’s a remarkable role, and although I think Brad (or whoever ends up winning the Oscar) will deserve it, Shia’s performance here is certainly awards-caliber imo.P.s. his script is also great- couldn’t believe this was his debut! Super nuanced and naturalistic, with several too-horrible-to-be-made-up scenes of fatherly abuse:/ via /r/movies https://ift.tt/2KajZdj
