I watched Terminator 1 - 5 for the first time in 2019 and I have to get my thoughts out.

I decided to watch the Terminator movies because of all the buzz surrounding the new film. As a kid I've seen some bits and pieces from T2 when it was on tv, but I've never actually sat down and really watched it. T1 and 2 were already old movies when I was a kid. Never seen any of the other ones.So I started with the first one obviously and I have to say, it's a really solid movie. There is a little mystery at the beginning with the multiple Sarrah Conner murders and the detective scenes, wich I liked. And then Kyle Reese reveals more about the war and all the lore and stuff. It's well done. The action is a little tame by today's standards but I can't say anything bad about it. It's well filmed and there is definitely tension. Arnold is alright in this movie. I was a bit surprised by how few lines he has, but it works better this way. He really feels like an unstopable robotic force of nature. This movie is good in it's simplicity, in the same way a movie like John Wick is good. It's focused and has a clear goal that it achieves. Good movie. If I had to give it a rating, it would be somewhere between a 7 and an 8 out of 10 I think. Probably a bit closer to an 8. Good, solid movie. And then comes T2. Amazing. Simply amazing. Its reputation precedes this movie and I have to say it deserves all the praise it gets. This movie is gripping from beginning to end. I was sad when it was over. It's well acted, well directed, it has a good story and a good villain. First the villain. Robert Patrick portays the T-1000 really well. He's not physically as imposing as Arnold, but he has a creepyness over him. I like how he is also a lot smarter then the t-800. How he dresses as a police officer and questions people. He can really blend in. I also like the scene where he goes to check the dog's tag and sees he made a mistake. Plus his powers are terrifying. The gci is a bit dated but it's used sparingly so it doesn't matter that much. I'm usually not a fan of child actors, but the kid in this is as good as child actors go. Arnold is also better in this movie. His acting improved and I really like the relationship between him and John. The terminator actually grows as a character throughout the movie, even though it isn't supposed to have a personality. Very well done. I was already aware of him being the good guy so the twist didn't do much for me. But I guess it was cool back in the day when the movie was new. Now the standout of this movie to me is Linda Hamilton as Sarah Connor. What an amazing performance. This is how you make a strong female character. She is a serious badass and I love her. It's not forced, she's not a man with tits. In the first movie she is just a normal person. We see her as a waitress, we see her dressing up for a night out and she is pretty much a victim. But this whole terminator chase is a traumatic experience and she understands more things are to come and she has to prepare. And so it's completely believable that she is a badass in T2. It's actually logical. And you have to give credit to the actress. Sarah connor in T1 is a way different role then in T2 and she pulls it off flawlessly. You're not sure if she's keeping it together or not. If she's sane or not. The scene where she tries to kill the Cyberdyne guy but can't and breaks down is fantastic. It reminds me a bit of Breaking Bad, where Bryan Cranston usually gets all the credit just like Terminator is Arnold's franchise, but Aaron Paul's emotional acting is a true highlight of the show for me. That is really difficult to pull off and Linda Hamilton does the same here. If I have to rate this movie I would give it a 9/10 easily. Genuine masterpiece that I'm going to rewatch very soon.T3 Yeah, it's fucking bad. Going into it I knew it was considered bad, but I thought maybe time has been kinder to this film and maybe it isn't that bad. But it is. It is so uninspired. The new terminator has guns now, because that is the next logical step I guess. There is no creativity going on at all. At the start of the film she gets pulled over by the police. There is a quick scene where she enlarges her breasts. I first thought, oh hey, they're gonna use a terminator who uses female traits to blend in and maybe seduce and trick people, that could be cool. But no, she does absolutely nothing with it. Then Arnold shows up, he enters a bar and it's ladies night and it's supposed to be funny I guess. At that point I knew this was going to be bad. Arnold is there because he needs to be there. There is no emotional connection to the terminator, no real story reason. We're just going to do the same thing again. John connor is horribly miscast. It's not the actors fault but he does not look like a future millitary leader at all. And he's dumb as shit. His mother taught him everything she knew, but at the beginning he uses dog medicine? Wtf did your momma teach you? And if he is supposed to become this great millitary resistance leader, why is he such a bitch that needs protecting the entire movie? He never fires a fucking gun. Except at the very end he fires one round to no effect. It's just so dumb. This movie is so uninspired and I don't get it. I assume the creators watched T1 and T2 right? How the fuck can you watch T2 and then make this? How can you watch that movie, go to a writers room and be so uninsprired that you come up with this shit? I can't fathom it. When I finished T2 yesterday I was riding on the high of it the rest of the night. If you're going to use an adult John Conner, do something with him. Why not have the Terminator come back, and then it turns out JC doesn't need saving? He's a badass already. And then they could team up in a buddy cop way or something or the roles get reversed and he has to protect the Terminator or something? I don't know, I'm no scriptwriter or whatever but I think I could come up with something better than this. The only thing I like about this movie is the ending. I like that it's a dark ending and not a happy one. And the action is fine. But for the rest...just no. 4/10 would not recommend.T4 is a weird one. I like that it tries to do something different, but it is just mediocre in every way. And it's not what you expect. First of all, where the fuck are the lasers? Those little scenes of the future in the previous movies are dope. But this does not look anything like that at all. I like Christian Bale as John Connor. He fits the look. But he has so little to do in this movie. And he's not the main character. That is arguably Marcus. And honestly I didn't really care for Marcus's storyline. The mystery of is he or is he not a terminator is interesting at first, but I don't like this Human - Terminator hybrid stuff. It's getting a bit into the Matrix or Resident Evil territory of absurdity. Not a fan of that at all. It was fun seeing a young Kyle Reese, but ultimately everything is forgettable in the movie. I've seen it 2 days ago and I can already remember almost nothing that happenend in this movie. 5/10. Not offensively bad as T3 but very mediocre nonetheless. The last one, T5 Genisys. Another weird one. As a movie on its own, it's not that bad. The action is good, the acting is fine. It's very watchable. But the story choices is where it goes off the rails for me. So we go back to 1984, but this time a terminator is already sent back earlier to train Sarah Connor. I like Emilia Clarke in GOT and I like her here. She's no Linda Hamilton but she does a fine job with what she's been given. I like that Arnold as the Terminator has a bit more character to him. It's what T3 missed. Not that you would fix the movie with that, but it would help I think. But who sent Arnold back to a younger Sarah? It is never explained in the movie. Did they forget that? That is really weird. What I also found weird is that Sarah and Arnold built a time machine in the sewers? Wtf? I get Sarah becoming a weapons and demolition expert. I would even believe her to master flying aircraft and stuff but building a time machine? What the fuck, that makes no sense at all. But whatever I guess. The movie lost me with the evil John Connor reveal. It's bad and makes no sense. Why would he join the machines? What is the motivation? Why do you think you can trust them after they tried killing you multiple times? Maybe there is an explanation for it, but I didn't catch it. And a terminator touches you and you become a robot? I didn't like the hybrid stuff in T4 and this takes it even further and I like it even less. I would still rate it above t3 and t4. Maybe a 6/10.And that's it. I've watched all the terminator movies over a couple of days and I have to say, I've enjoyed it for the most part. The first two are good and the rest not so much unfortunately. But even the bad ones are watchable. It's not Star wars prequels kind of bad. I regret not seeing T2 earlier, I have definitely missed out. That movie almost made me a fan of this franchise. If you've seen this movie multiple times throughout the years I can really understand becoming attached to the franchise. It really is that good. I'm still on the fence about seeing Dark Fate in theaters. All the buzz surrounding this movie made me watch the franchise but I've heard mixed things about it. I expect something similair to Genisys. Watchable, with good and very bad moments. But I'll definitely see it at some point. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/36EQ3zM
