I swear I'm not trolling. I used to roll my eyes any time someone talked about Luke Skywalker or the Death Star. Stupid, boring 1970s graphics and crappy characters that nerds love for some reason. It's been a very long time, but I probably saw the original Star Wars trilogy when I was a kid. I honestly don't even remember if I've ever sat down and watched all 3 films, but if i have, it's probably been over 25 years since I saw them. They never really resonated with me, so I never bothered with any of the newer films. On a whim, I sat down and watched Star Wars yesterday. The characters, of course, felt vaguely familiar since they've all become part of our culture. And little things that have become memes ("these are not the droids...") made me chuckle a bit.But then, a funny thing happened: I'm watching it and thinking to myself, "This movie is GOOD. Like really, really good. And it holds up amazingly well." The story is basic, but not without its surprises. The characters are timeless and written very well - Obi-Wan is a hero, Han's a dick until he isn't, Luke is kind of a whiny baby until he isn't, Princess Leia isn't just the useless chick or a bitch, C-3PO is funny and heroic, Darth Vader/the Empire are pure evil, and R2-D2 and Chewbacca generate legit feels without speaking a word of English. Almost all of the characters grow and change in some way, which is pretty incredible since there are like 8 key characters. The themes are very basic, but done extremely well, such as good vs. evil and choosing your path in life. Plus, it's a film set in another time/place, plus space, but somehow isn't really much of a science fiction movie. It's more adventure/fantasy...in space. And the special effects, while dated, still somehow look good! The light sabers especially looked awesome.By the end of the movie, I was rooting for them to destroy the Death Star and I was legitimately on the edge of my seat because I couldn't remember how it ended. Yeah, I figured Han Solo was going to come back and help, but in the midst of the battle, I completely forgot about him. When he saves the day and keeps Darth Vader off Luke's back, I let out an audible sigh of relief.I know the original movie spawned like 9 sequels and everything else surrounding the culture that has become bigger than everything, but from a completely neutral and even skeptical viewer, Star Wars is a great film. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/2kcbAfE
