Too many superhero, video game adaptations, and re-makes in 2019.......ARE THERE ANY GOOD COMEDIES OR ORIGINAL MOVIES COMING OUT?
I'm a superhero flick fan as much as the next guy, but this year since almost overloaded with those types of films, plus all these summer blockbuster remakes from disney, dora the explorer, sonic, and more like these.Has hollywood officially run out of ideas? Are there any good comedies or original films coming out that I should be equally excited for? via /r/movies http://bit.ly/2GKlufH
It's an undeniable fact that female characters are more heavily and unfairly scrutinized than their male counterparts.
Female characters, especially in "nerd communities" like Star Wars, Marvel, GoT, etc, are constantly being mistreated. They are picked a part more harshly, nitpicked, and double standards are fully rampant. I am going to go down a list of female characters that recieved some unfair treatment over the years in order to get my point across.Rey: Rey is the Chosen One. A girl born from nothing who relied on herself to prosper and live a healthy life. She learned how to fight by herself and studied how to fly and fix ships. She was introduced as a strong woman by default, and the context clues regarding her origin is enough to where you don't have to see her training. She is strong in the Force but she isn't a militant warrior in the likes of Yoda yet. She is still untrained and erratic with her powers. She lacks focus and her emotions are wayward. This doesn't make her a Mary Sue. It makes her a powerful and scared girl who has always had this ability but was too afraid or ignorant to use it. Luke Skywalker was a farm boy raised in a decent household. He was able to use a lightsaber decently well with no prior experience in combat. He was an expert pilot and was trusted to blow up the Death Star even though the Rebels had just met him. However, Luke is beloved and no one blasts him like they do Rey.Carol Danvers: Captain Marvel, like Rey, was a strong woman before she got powers. Fans feared that she would kill Thanos and steal the spotlight away from the Avengers. They claimed her power is unwarranted and she is too "OP". But that isn't the point of her solo movie. Spoilers for CM. The point was that she is an already powerful woman who is being robbed of her potential. She has flaws: she's a hothead, too passionate for her own good, too headstrong, not a team player, etc. In Endgame, Carol has been a hero for twenty years, which is more than most heroes with the exception of Thor. Doctor Strange only had one movie and was still the key to the Avengers' win. No one cared about this and lauded Doctor Strange's prescence in the film.Shuri: Shuri get's blasted for being the smartest person in the MCU. Despite this being a non issue, Shuri's intelligence is shown throughout BP and IW. Instead of telling us simply, Marvel shows us why she's the best, and isn't that what people want them to do? Her intelligence is no difference than how Tony or Bruce portrayed their intelligence. But the difference is that fans can easily see Tony as the smartest, but doubt Shuri's. It isn't outlandish to understand that a royal girl who recieved an education in the best country on the planet would be smarter than an American billionaire.Arya Stark: This is the newest controversy. Supposedly, after recent events in GoT, Arya Stark is a Mary Sue. Arya has shown her training throughout the seasons and proved time and time again she is a dedicated fighter. Her actions in the recent episode of GoT reflect that character development. My point is, the Mary Sue argument is tired, sexist, and contradictory. If we had reservations to characters who were good just because (John Wick, Dominic Toretto, the Rock, Ender) movies will be way less enjoyable. Rooting out these toxic elements in fandoms would provide a better space for fans, especially female fans. via /r/movies http://bit.ly/2Ld7kcn
The beauty that is "The Relic" (1997)
I recently got to watch the movie thanks to Amazon prime, finally. I have been aware of the film for at least 3 years, originally learning about it thanks to a youtuber by the name of Good Bad Flicks. If you havent checked him out, you are missing out, because he reviews odd films that never were picked up by the audience and his review of The Relic was one of those that never left my mind. The film is a master class of low light horror, has a decent cast, and a monster that is genuinely interesting. It was the first horror film in a while that kept my eyes glued to it the entire time, and on the edge of my seat at that. I wont go into the plot because this was more of just a plug for a good horror film, but if you enjoy small monster movies and are afraid of the dark, you'll enjoy this film. And if you have the time, you should check out Good Bad Flicks on youtube because his review of the film also has a fun BTS history lesson about the film that makes a viewing of the film that much more interesting.(To those who have seen it and love The Relic, could you recommend any other horror films that play with lighting in the same way, because now I want more.) via /r/movies http://bit.ly/2GQBDBp
Box Office Week: Avengers: Endgame tops the all time domestic and worldwide opening weekend records set by Avengers: Infinity War, opening to a monumental $350M domestic and $1.2B worldwide. The film is now the 18th highest grossing film of all time after just 3 days.

Where to even begin. Well let's start with the basics . Avengers: Endgame, the culmination of the first major run of the most successful film franchise of all time, opened this weekend to a kind of okay, solid, a little underwhelming #1 with $350M domestic and $1.2B worldwide. So you know, it might break even. For real though that is the biggest opening ever, beating the $257.6M domestic and $640.5 worldwide opening records set by Avengers: Infinity War just last year. It beat every single opening record: biggest foreign opening, biggest opening day, biggest Friday, biggest Saturday, and biggest Sunday on the day that the most expensive TV episode of all time premiered. Not only is the first time any film has opened over $300M domestic and $1B worldwide, and not only is this now the 18th highest grossing film AFTER JUST 3 DAYS, but also this is the biggest jump up in the records ever. Previously, Star Wars: The Force Awakens had the biggest jump opening $39M more than Jurassic World and Infinity War set the international record with a jump up of $98.6M from Fate of the Furious. In context, Endgame jumped up $92.4M more domestic and $568.5M more worldwide! One last insane note, the #2 and #3 biggest worldwide openings combined is still LESS than Avengers: Endgame's worldwide opening. Absolute. Goddamn. Madness.Avengers: Endgame (cont.) - So where do we go now? Well the obvious question is of course will this finally be the film that after almost 10 years dethrones the 2009 megahit The Princess and the Frog as the biggest film ever. Oh no wait...sorry Avatar! To remind you Avatar's insane record has not even even come close to being broken, standing at $2.78B. The closest film is Titanic with $2.18B and if you count out Titanic's re-release it's The Force Awakens with $2.06B (Infinity War is a close fourth with $2.04B). So the good news for Endgame is of course this massive head start, especially in foreign sales. Yes, Avatar set the then domestic record with a huge $760M domestic but it's the still unbeatable $2B in overall worldwide gross that has made it such a long term champion. Endgame stands at $859M so far in overseas sales in just three days so getting to $2B does not seem that impossible. Domestic is even easier, as even if the film has an absolutely terrible multiplier (say 2x) it still passes $700M domestic. If it has the same multiplier as Infinity War (2.63x) it will gross over $900M. If it has a multiplier over 2.85x (a harder run but not unprecedented for the MCU) it will be the first film to cross $1B domestic and dethrone The Force Awakens $936.7M domestic record.Avengers: Endgame (cont.) - However, let's play devil's advocate for a second here about why it may not be the biggest domestic or foreign. For one MCU films do tend to have multipliers in the 2.5x - 2.75x range which would mean a truly amazing run of around $700M - $800M which is good but loses the record. Let's also note that The Force Awakens had the advantage of Christmas time on its side, tons of people with nothing to do which gave the film its incredible 39.8% second weekend drop and its even more incredible 3.77x multiplier. Endgame just doesn't have that on its side as again MCU films tend to drop a decent amount second weekend and it does have competition. Maybe I'm wrong here, but I really do feel that people are underestimating Detective Pikachu which opens in two weeks. Do you know what the single most lucrative media franchise of all time is? Not Star Wars, not the MCU, not Disney Princesses. It's Pokemon. And this is the first live action Pokemon film ever made by a major studio. It could put a serious dent in Endgame's third weekend. And there's the potential that this weekend was so big because so many wanted to avoid spoilers. Not to mention the three hour runtime, though remember the per theater average this weekend for Endgame was a record $75K. So yeah theaters will make as much room as possible, but ultimately you only have so much time and theater space. And there's the film's somber tone which could leave some not wanting to revisit right away. Look, I'm not saying I will just be totally stunned if the film closes to $1B domestic and $3B worldwide. I'm saying don't open the champagne for that those records yet. Definitely keep it on ice though.Avengers: Endgame (cont.) - Now explaining how we got here is obvious but I'd like to quickly sum it up. When Kevin Feige bet the rights of the remaining Marvel characters they owned against the first four Marvel films, he was betting on the idea that he could use serialized storytelling to create a new kind of blockbuster. I thought The Avengers was the culmination of that idea but now looking back it was just a stepping stone. There's a moment in Endgame that only works if you've built this franchise up as well as he and the MCU team has for 11 years. This franchise is so powerful because of that patience, that understanding of story, that understanding of modern culture and what audiences want. You may despise these movies but goddamn, you have to respect them. This opening will stand for a very long time. And even if this film closes and Force Awakens and Avatar keep their all-time titles, it will still stand as the biggest achievement a producer has ever made. There's a reason so many other franchise have failed to replicate this formula. It's because it takes time, patience, risk, trial, and error. MCU has never failed fully but it very well could have along the way, a lot of times. It's truly a huge moment in cinema history to have a film this hyped still be critically acclaimed, generally loved by fans, and this big of hit. And it all happened because it features Fortnite. Blade Runner 2049 captures so many themes that it requires so many viewings to understand them all
God this film is a masterpiece. Along with several other films (including The Shining and Vertigo), this film, in my opinion, is practically perfect in every way.Every viewing I get enthralled by a new character and what it truly means at the core. The first time I watched it, it was obviously Joe (or K). Second, Joi. This time, I am completely convinced that Luv is one of the most layered characters in the film. She reminds me of Roy Batty in so many ways. She wants so desperately to be human, to be someone “special”. She empathizes with her own “skin-jobs” and feels the need to take revenge on K’s wrong-doers. I love one of the first scenes that establishes her as no nonsense— where she kills Coco. Earlier, Coco makes some slightly racial comments about replicants and almost mockingly says “sorry” when K could hear the remark. To me, Luv had to have seen that play out to find where the bones were located, thus making her literally kill the man in seconds. The first time I watched that scene, I was like “Wow bitch okay just kill a guy for no reason”, the second time I was like “oh maybe she didn’t have the right credentials and snuck in?” And this time it’s “oh she had the right credentials, but she just wants to fuck him over because he’s basically racist towards replicants and she empathizes with her kind”.GOD I cannot emphasize enough how layered and beautiful this film is— especially the characters. I really suggest watching the film multiple times, but focusing on a single character in the film. There’s symbolism everywhere and in every character. Luv to me was one of those where I absolutely despised her, but then learned to realize she’s literally just a slave of Wallace; bound to him and unable to break free from it, just as Roy Batty wanted to. via /r/movies http://bit.ly/2J1pzPh
Pacific Rim 2 makes the original Pacific Rim look like Citizen Kane.
Just made the mistake of buying this movie on digital, and I’m in awe at how fantastically awful it is. I don’t even know where to start with this one. I spent $15 so felt compelled to suffer through this abomination.Anyone enjoy this movie that can maybe illustrate areas that my shocked disgust caused me to overlook? Change my mind plz, I can’t go to sleep with this taste in my mouthhole. via /r/movies http://bit.ly/2vtQFqy
Spider-Man: Into The Spiderverse is an absolute masterpiece of a film.
This has likely been posted a bazillion times here and is probably eye-roll inducing at this point, but I’m re-watching this movie for a third time and I’m still absolutely blown away at every aspect of this film, from the animation, the writing, directing, the editing, the voice acting, the art style, the incredible score and music selection... I mean, everything. It’s nothing short of brilliant and I can’t help but respect it more and more with each viewing.Miles Morales is such an approachable hero and it’s almost impossible not to feel for him or like him from the opening scene to the final line. The Peter Parker’s, from the Amazing to the Incredible, sum up their personalities so well and really illustrate the differences between them in strong and subtle ways. The scene where Incredible memorizes the password while seeing it typed one time in the reflection of the monitor does so well to show that, despite his flaws, he sincerely is just, well, incredible, and the way he is with Miles is inspiring and touching, especially viewing it as a new father to a 1.5 year old... honestly, I got a bit of dust in my eye when Miles flipped it on him at the end. Alright, gotta be honest, got a bit overwhelmed at a bunch of scenes, and my SO constantly makes fun of me for having almost no reaction to most films I watch. Did I get a big spoonful of it when I lost it at the end πThe song choices from the start, and the scores in between, from beginning to end are masterful - the scene after the throw up with Uncle Aaron where he’s trying to sleep while his roommate is on the computer, for example, is mind blowingly perfect... the haunting, anxious mystery... man.. Daniel Pemberton, dude, HATS OFF TO YOU. I could go on and on about the music alone...I’m sitting here watching it with my kid and felt overwhelmed with how amazing this flick is and just had to share my feels with y’all, Reddit, cuz my lady thinks I’m π. Thanks for reading ❤️Remember Reddit, with great ability comes great accountability. Pretty sure that’s how it goes ππΌ✌πΌ via /r/movies http://bit.ly/2WdZoZs
