They Shall Not Grow Old is easily one of the most grizzly and gut-wrenching films I've ever seen, yet is also the most warm and moving as well. Peter Jackson is truly a great director

Note: I won't be marking this as spoilers since this is a historical documentary filmIt is a documentary film narrated by WWI veterans with spectacular re-mastered footage (with any sounds of talking and gunfire being voice acting and sound effects). It starts out describing the early days of the war and how millions of boys enlisted at once and regularly lied about their age just to get sent over to fight the Germans with their friends. It then moved into training and how there weren't enough supplies to even give out to recruits let alone experienced men. They would steal from each other but also found time to chat and relax and have a cup of tea before being thrown into the fog of war. When they got over there, that is when hell broke loose. What I found interesting was how easily so many of the veterans were able to talk about their experiences yet I can't imagine how terrified they must have been crossing a field while being fired at by machine guns and having their best friends die left and right. There were segments where the film would zoom in on a group of soldiers and focus on a particular individual and then cut to their dead corpse lying face down in the mud with their head practically gone. And after the battles, men were being told by others "Don't look, lad. Keep on", telling them to ignore the carnage and be thankful they're still alive and get to live another day.It all culminated with a declaration of armistice and the boys going home to an unwelcome England. It's like the people just ignored their sacrifices they endured. But can you blame them? They have no idea what those men went through on a daily basis. Still, finding work was a lifelong struggle for a lot of them.As I said, Jackson has truly outdone himself this time. I thank him for his efforts to restore this film to its best quality. Truly remarkable. In the end, I highly recommend going to see this film in theaters or renting it when you can. You'll enjoy it very much. And let me just say how thankful I am for all of our veterans past and present who have put their lives on the line for their country. I think war is a waste of valuable and precious human life. But anyone willing to die protecting their loved ones and the country they love is respectable in my book. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/2HqLFuN
