There is a website called the Internet Movie Script Database (IMSDB.com) where you can read most of your favorite movie scripts for free.

https://ift.tt/2JzCN8b thought I would leave this here. There are tons of scripts here. Ones that I have read or plan to read (to give you an idea of what is available): Passengers, 500 Days of Summer, Avatar, Easy A, The Incredibles, Insidious, Scott Pilgrim vs The World, Tropic Thunder, American Psycho, Carrie, Drag Me to Hell, Get Out, Jennifer’s Body, Mulholland Drive, Orphan, and Scream. It’s really interesting to see how close a final film ended up sticking to the script. And it’s a great tool for helping screenwriters. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/2VnhV6N

Which movie left you disappointed?

For me, it's probably Joker. Plenty of people on the internet were hyping it up as one of the best movies of the year calling it Joaquin Phoenix's best performance. Phoenix is incredible but I found the movie itself to be bland and predictable. Somehow Joker wanted me to think that being shitty at stand-up comedy was a good excuse for going insane and being evil. It's not an outright terrible film, but I wanted Joker to be more than a rip-off of The King of Comedy and Taxi Driver. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/37l8jiB

The Thing by John Carpenter is god tier level horror

No CGI, nonsense story line, amazing visual effects all hand made, and people still question the outcome of this amazing film. Kurt Russell was perfect for the role, they all were. Ridley Scott Turns 83: A Personal History and Appreciation

For most of my life, I regarded Ridley Scott as a director who made slick, well-crafted movies that nonetheless left me cold. Spielberg – more embracing, sentimental, whose name graced the credits of so many childhood favorites - used to monopolize my attention. Alien was a modest oldie that was overshadowed by its more action-oriented sequel; Blade Runner nearly put me to sleep back in the VHS days; Black Hawk Down had a relentless intensity that left little room for emotional resonance; Gladiator wowed with great sets, costumes and a star-making Russell Crowe turn, yet the acclaim befuddled me; Hannibal could be summed up as a bizarre exaggeration of its Oscar-winning predecessor. Scott seemed to be an imperious, scowling “man’s man”. Remember his sour face during the producers’ speech when Gladiator won Best Picture but he went home emptyhanded? Tough guy to like.Nowadays, he’s my favorite filmmaker. How did that happen?I warmed up to him little by little, starting with the bonus materials on the Hannibal DVD, in which I found him surprisingly funny – the story he told about calling Steven Zaillian’s office and absent-mindedly asking for Ted Telly instead made me crack up. Matchstick Men was an unexpected comedic delight, as was the taut geopolitical thriller Body of Lies and the entertaining period epic Robin Hood. After getting a Blu-ray player, I popped in Blade Runner: The Final Cut which, seen through the eyes of an adult instead of an impatient young teenager, finally earned its reputation as a masterpiece. We’re in 2010 now – I was already a hardcore Alien franchise fan, still more reverential towards Cameron’s 1986 entry. It was around that time I got wind of some exciting news: Ridley Scott would be back to direct a prequel to his own 1979 milestone! Alien: Resurrection and those accursed crossovers that shall go unnamed hadn’t killed the star beast after all. Encouraged by my newfound appreciation for him thanks to how much I had liked his recent output, I began to pay more attention to all things Scott.Despite not seeing it in 3D and having overcome my initial disappointment that it wouldn’t be a direct prequel, I took a liking to Prometheus from the get-go. It was the kind of movie that encouraged viewers to spend days reading other people’s interpretations and theories after leaving the theater, and also my favorite brand of sci-fi: atmospheric, enigmatic, speculating on our origins, our faith, and whether we are alone in the universe. It was only in the following year, however, when I saw it again at home, that my appreciation blossomed into full-blown admiration. It provided awe and wonder with an edge, something that Spielberg seemingly no longer cared about, having turned into a chronicler of all things Old and Important. Do you know how you can be so thoroughly consumed by a movie to the point that it colors the impressions you have not only of its director’s past legacy but also of his upcoming projects? Suddenly I found myself revisiting and rethinking – in other words, seeing with new eyes – Scott's oeuvre, identifying stylistic and thematic patterns, and above all, though rather subtly, a personality as a storyteller that was unmistakably his own and which he did manage to imprint on some of his films, sometimes even in the most commercial ones. From indifference to mild interest to fandom. What follows isn’t substantial enough to merit a detailed explanation, so long story short: I rewatched Alien for the first time in over a decade. The result? mindblown.gif. It became my all-time number one movie, and Scott cemented himself as the biggest head in my personal Mount Rushmore of directors. What about his touch that justifies this homage, though? Let’s skip the commonplace - yet totally valid - reasons, such as “a great eye for detail”, “the sheer aesthetic beauty” or “a knack for worldbuilding”. Fostering recurring themes, favoring a certain type of camera placement or movement, setting a particular rhythm to the proceedings during the shooting or in post etc. are but a few of the trademarks of a distinctive filmmaker. Just as relevant is their ability to develop a consistent cinematic reality of their own. I’d describe Scott’s as one where human behavior and emotion are rendered in a less typically mannered, heightened fashion than most mainstream Hollywood fare, utterly apart from, say, the aforementioned Spielberg. There is an unsentimental, matter-of-fact patina to his outlook on life. Consider how God is represented simply by a curt boy in Exodus: Gods and Kings. Remember the formal, albeit merciless, dialogue-exchange-as-power-play between “father” and “son” that opens Alien: Covenant. A skeptical reader might argue that it’s in the script, therefore not creditable to Scott. I’m not referring merely to the concepts per se but to their enactment, which is guided by the hands of the director. It’s a trait detectable mainly in his 21st-century work. (With perhaps two exceptions - Black Rain, Thelma & Louise -, his post-Blade Runner, pre-Gladiator period feels anonymous, uninspired in terms of self-expression.) You will notice that these two examples stem from not long ago – a deliberate choice to illustrate how the usual claims that he has “lost it” are shortsighted. If one pays attention, however, it’s clear that said resemblance to realism in characterization and setting can be found in good ole Alien, what with its world-weary blue-collar characters, their down-to-earth banter and occasionally blunt interactions, not to mention the cluttered, lived-in interiors of the Nostromo. Along with a select few colleagues like Mann, Fincher and heir apparent Villeneuve, Ridley Scott is living proof that intelligent life can still be found in big-budget Hollywood, catering to the demands of the adults in the audience. This is meant as a thank-you note to a filmmaker whose vision not only helped me (re)shape my ability to recognize what I see around me in the wide white canvas of the big screen but also stimulates my imagination with waking dreams that are a tad brainier and, paradoxically, less escapist than those concocted by populist entertainers. Being a fan has never been so exciting: at 83, Scott has no less than three major theatrical features to be released in the near future.Note to Gaff: unlike Rachael, he will live!Sir Ridley Scott via /r/movies https://ift.tt/2Jm0h0X

How Did Michael Bay's Directing Career Get Worse With Every Movie?

So the other day I was rewatching Transformers Three and had a thought. How did Michael Bay get worse at making a film every time. I think he started out with some pretty good movies like Bad Boys and The Rock but then he hit Transformers. I know at the time I liked the movies and found them pretty ok, but when I look back now all I see are Five movies that are just big action and no story. Then Six Underground happened and that film is just bad. Like the plot jumps from left to right it had more of his big action and no story to the point where it was just over the top. That was the first film I quit watching because I had to rewatch the first 30 minutes over three times and did not know what was happening. But the main question would be how does a film maker who started off with some good action flicks end up getting worse and worse and not learning the mistakes from the last time? via /r/movies https://ift.tt/3qkuRsH

I'm watching John Wick, and the music and sound effects are so loud that I can't hear a damn thing they're saying because they're always whispering. I have a Bose surround sound system in my living room and I constantly have the adjust the volume because of the awful mix. Arrival: The Sci-Fi film you should watch next

It was an impulse watch and i regret not watching it in theatres 4 years back. First of all, Amy Adam’s performance was brilliant. It was mature, heartbreaking, and subtle all at once. The cinematography was great, especially the scenes in the spaceship (if that’s what it was) and the language/sign scenes. The score was haunting and beautiful. The plot and ideas were linear yet looped, simple yet complex. And i loved it. It was the first film in a while that made me feel a mixture of emotions i couldn’t put my finger on. The ending was bittersweet, yet it made me feel other indescribable emotions. It also made me reflect a lot on my life, my choices, and my way of thinking — If we knew what was going to happen, what will we do differently? How different will our choices be?Arrival is definitely not your average sci-fi film, and i suggest everyone who hasn’t watched it to give it a try! It’s nice under 2 hours and i can see why it won many awards when it was first released.tl;dr: Arrival is amazing. Please watch it. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/2KMUaTH

I know it's been said before, but Passengers (2016) could have had an amazing plot twist if only the beginning of the movie became the middle, and the middle of the movie was the beginning.

The original story goes that Jim's hibernation pod malfunctions, he spends a year alone on the ship before deciding to wake up Aurora, trapping her with him. Aurora wakes up and Jim lies and goes with the story that her hibernation pod malfunctioned just like his did. They fall in love until the robot slips up and tells Aurora that Jim woke her up on purpose. They fight and don't talk but eventually come together to save the now completely malfunctioning ship and the other passengers on board. The problem with this narrative is that the audience is in on what is happening at all times, so there is never an element of suspicion or surprise. The story should have been arranged like this:Start the movie with Aurora waking up and finding Jim who should be acting surprised to see another person. He would explain that her pod likely malfunctioned like his did one year ago, they won't be reaching their destination before they die of old age, and that they are basically trapped for life on a space ship. They fall in love, live on the ship, then they get to that big dinner scene. The robot spills the truth that Aurora's pod didn't malfunction at all, and it was Jim that woke her up. She asks Jim if that's the truth, and at this moment we go back to the beginning of the story, showing that Jim's pod malfunctioned and he did in fact wake her up. Then we flash-forward back to the dinner scene once Aurora has found out the truth and the movie plays out like normal from there. This would have been an AMAZING plot twist that would have made much more impact. I knew it felt weird watching Jennifer Lawrence have to react to something huge that we the audience have known about the entire time. I think it's a huge missed opportunity. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/3o3pjAL

Although Terminator 2 is definitely a great movie, the first Terminator film is one that really delves into the horror element of the series.

The whole idea that you are being hunted by something that is so unhuman, something so out of this world and something that cannot/should exist yet and will not stop until it accomplishes the mission, that is something that will make you feel truly vulnerable as a human being. It really captures the whole unhuman element of the Terminator and how its role fits with the name, similar to how Reese says the famous line "It cannot be reasoned with. It cannot be bargained with".It truly makes the Terminator is incredibly monstrous, it cannot be stopped or destroyed and its aim is to accomplish its mission at all costs and the humans have to use whatever wits and spirit and resources that they can muster to kill this one monster. Now imagine how a whole army of these monsters would be in the future. And not only that, but the whole idea of killing the mother of John Connor instead of John Connor himself reinforces the legendary status of the name John Connor. We do not know what he looks like or how he is like so it is left up to us to figure it out. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/3moIjsY

LaKeith Stanfield has had a wonderful run so far

I actually first caught him in Short Term 12 and he was my favorite character in that movie which is funny since he turned out to now be one of my favorite actors. He’s been in so many of my favorite movies. Most notably, Sorry To Bother You which is one of my favorite films of all time.He always seems to be the same character when he acts but slightly different variations of that character. I loved him in Uncut Gems which is also one of my favorite films ever. That was a pleasant surprise and honestly probably my favorite act from him. Atlanta was super solid and I hope they make another season because he fit the role perfectly. Get Out was very very good as well, which makes him in 3 of my favorite films of all time.I look forward to this guys future roles and I wonder where he’ll be in say 5 years time acting wise. Super solid actor who seems to get a role in the best movies. He may seem ordinary or boring at first but I think there’s something different about him that really reels me in. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/33HPjtR

Klaus, the must watch Christmas movie for everybody

With Thanksgiving brushed off and just a few days away from December, my girlfriend and I have started our quarantine Christmas movie marathons and we got the chance to watch this masterpiece. I heard very little about it, but it's now my favorite Christmas movie of all time with stunning animations, a beautiful score, heart warming plot, and a great message.Although predictable at times, it's a unique Christmas orgin story that explores the elements of the holidays, and it does so in a way that's light hearted and innocent, but has its deep and memorable moments. It follows a protagonist, Jesper, that starts off as a spoiled brat that eventually comes to warm your heart through his actions and relationships. I loved all the characters and the town that we explore with the Jesper. It definitely is full of feels good moments and humor that I can't get enough of. I highly recommend it for basically anybody, and it's a real treat as we look forward to the holidays. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/3fLrE03

Rambo: First Blood is a good example of how stories that are set up in a smaller scale can work just as much as those that are set in a larger epic scale, especially in the context of action-based stories.

I have always had an admiration for "smaller" stories. The scenario feels more real and personal and almost relatable even because as much as the story may be set up in a certain small area or within a small list of characters, they feel quite real and human and relatable but also as though the "space" of the scale or the closeness gives the impression that you are just as included in the story once you empathise and relate with the characters.By now, Rambo has been deeply embedded in pop culture - chiselled body, shirtless shooting, explosive ammo, guerilla warfare, and countless epic battles with the countless body count. The Rambo films are a guilty pleasure of glorification of the stereotypical badass who feels like he can overpower entire armies or even the armies of the world, as though one man can change, perhaps quite literally as Rambo films often take place in settings where the villains have control in many areas of the world or maybe an entire country. Many action films take this approach, as though in order to make the stake as high as possible, they have to add a scale that is as epic and grand that you cannot imagine, think that the entire country is at stake, or the world or maybe the universe; and one person or a group of people can do this to set things right. But not the first Rambo film. In this film, Rambo is quite capable in guerilla warfare and brutal survival but he is just as vulnerable and scared. He was able to take down large groups of semi-corrupt police officers (without killing them, mind you) through his sheer persistence of possibly years of training, and clever strategy and patience instead of the usual epic level of badassery and shootouts that appear in the other films. But what is most appealing is that this takes place in a small remote town (plus a forest that feels like a jungle which Rambo is much more familiar with) and the story feels very personal.First, Rambo goes to find his friend but finds out that he died of cancer, and then he is being chased by a semi-corrupt police force who kinda abuse their power (only one officer is really "evil" in the film that is the only death in the film which Rambo killed only by accident) and also because they are suspicious of Rambo because of how he looks. What is more important is that not only this is a different kind of story from the context of scale, but also in the context of how it portrays the themes of the story and its characters.Like I said before, Rambo is more than capable to take down these police officers but chooses not to and even repeatedly said to them "did not do anything wrong" and was acting out of survival. He still showed feelings of fear, anxiety, and even pain when we saw the flashbacks of the torture scenes and when he got injured. This is a story about the consequences of warfare, even in the context of the Vietnam war as we learn in the beginning that his friend died of cancer because of Agent Orange that was used during that time. What is most important that Rambo initially was not hostile. Sure, he felt out of place especially considering that he probably spent his whole life familiar with war and survival, but he started acting fight-or-flight when he started experiencing flashbacks which is a symptom of PTSD.Rambo does not win the fight in the end, he surrenders. And also, he cries in the end. He cries because he feels like the war is never over for him. He still feels as though he cannot switch off the survival/warrior mode that he had honed for many years. This kind of small and deeply personal type of story is what really appeals to me because it makes the story easier to track and much easier to relate with the characters and explore their depth even though the story may take place in a smaller scale compared to other stories, especially those that involve action or thrills. It makes the characters, especially the protagonists who may or may not need to save the day in the end, feel more human and therefore, more relatable. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/2JhrS3o
