I'm Ron Nyswaner, screenwriter on 'Philadelphia' - a movie that redefined AIDS for us all - Ask Me Anything
25 years ago, we released the movie 'Philadelphia,' at the height of the AIDS epidemic. With it, we (including the cast: Tom Hanks, Denzel Washington and Mary Steenburgen) were able to bring to life the very personal, human stories of the people dying from the disease and change the conversation from one of fear to one of compassion.I've recently partnered with (RED) and Coca-Cola to create a documentary, The Last Mile, that looks at the progress we've made since the movie came out, and forward to what it will take to eradicate the disease once and for all.Our goal is to raise money to get resources to everyone in need. The disease is completely treatable and preventable, yet one million people died last year from it.Please ASK ME ANYTHING about the movie and join us by making a donation to at red.org/cocacola. Together, we can #EndAIDS.HEY EVERYONE -- IT'S BEEN GREAT TALKING TO ALL OF YOU ABOUT THE MOVIE. BE SURE TO CHECK OUT THE LAST MILE. GOING TO LUNCH NOW. AND CHILDHOOD FRIEND -- GET IN TOUCH!Also - watch the film here and share with a friend: https://ift.tt/2Q8pbmT https://ift.tt/2RqcjoP via /r/movies https://ift.tt/2zxIg7V

So, you can literally stream the Criterion Collection, A24 films and more for free with a damn library card..
I don't know how I've missed this until now... but I can't believe this free Kanopy streaming service literally offers almost all the best shit, like... all the films I care about just happen to be streaming free of charge with no more than a library card. Almost every A24 film, Criterion film, HBO docs, most really good indie film that comes out of Sundance and other festivals... This is nuts. None of the public libraries close to me were included in Kanopy's system, but I was able to sign up with a school email address. Is anyone else using this service? I almost can't believe this exists via /r/movies https://ift.tt/2rew73c
Review Megathread - Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle
Rotten Tomatoes: 40% (average score: 5.5/10)Metacritic: 55/100Written ReviewsEmpire by Olly RichardsMowgli is a valiant effort to do something different, to make viewers feel the excitement and deep fear of living among wild animals. It has some bold, interesting ideas, but after one watch this jungle book is likely to be left on the shelf.Guardian by Peter BradshawSo we trudge back to the uncanny valley for another bout of ultra-realistic animation. No songs at all now, and not much fun.The Hollywood Reporter by Michael RechtshaffenEpisodic and distancing, the production, which had been slated as a Warner Bros. release until the studio sold worldwide distribution rights to Netflix in July, combines visuals that are alternately lush and nightmarish, performance-capture that falls unpersuasively short of state-of-the-art and a prestige cast (including Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett and Benedict Cumberbatch) that curiously fails to engage.IGN by Jim VejvodaIt’s intellectually intriguing and well-acted, but the inconsistent visual effects undermine the necessary suspension of disbelief when it comes to mixing live-action humans with talking CG animals in such a serious and somber adaptation of the Kipling classic.Indiewire by Kate ErblandThe disconnect between the artistic wonder of those characters and the rest of Mowgli’s family only distracts. From scene to scene, “Mowgli” is eye-popping and undercooked.New York Times by Glenn KennyThe filmmakers are clearly trying to bring an uncommon maturity to the fantasy film, and in many respects they succeed. While not everything here works, what does is impressive.RoberEbert.com by Matt Zoller SeitzThe uncanny valley of intent is an issue here, too. Who is this movie intended for? It's often difficult to say. There's no way it would have gotten made if Warner Bros. hadn't banked on children wanting to see it, and parents and guardians wanting to see it with them. But it's unrelentingly brutal, at times verging on turning into a sadistic Mel Gibson action thriller with talking animals. The Telegraph by Robbie CollinFast-forward two years and Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle has been picked up for a belated release by Netflix: a good outcome, all told, as unflattering box office comparisons won’t be an issue. Yet the pong of redundancy still lingers, if only because it’s hard to tell who – if anyone – is meant to enjoy it. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/2reIj3D

Movies that take place in one confined setting
Two examples that I've recently seen are both foreign filmsNothing to Hide (on Netflix)The Bar (Amazon video)12 angry men is also an exampleMovies that focus on a small group of ppl all in the same setting for the entire movie that it almost starts to feel claustrophobic. One by one, each character is magnifiedIn Nothing to Hide, each characters secrets are gradually laid out while in The Bar, it's pretty much an elimination gameInteresting setting concept, I think. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/2P9TXq4

What’s your favorite “this is so badass” moment in a movie?
For me, at least in recent memory, it’s in Thor Ragnarok. When Hela mockingly asks Thor what he is the god of... and then Immigrant Song by Zeppelin starts playing and Thor goes on a rampage. I’m literally sitting here on the edge of my seat every time wishing I could have some awesome moment like that. So- chills, goosebumps, or adrenaline rushes- what are your favorite moments like these? via /r/movies https://ift.tt/2TV9IEY
Re-watching The Bourne Identity made me feel old.
In one scene Marie gets upset and shocked over the fact that the first assassin had a picture of her. Saying something like "where'd he get my picture!?" And "who could do something like this?"It was a strange peak into a time that really wasn't so long ago when people didn't have their identities and life posted online for just anyone to have access to.Not to mention the huge desktop monitors they had back then. 90's early 2000's. via /r/movies https://ift.tt/2r9EJb7
Today is Filmstruck's final day, its library contained over 700 films, all classics
Sadly the best library in streaming goes dark. There is a silver lining, Criterion will be back next year with its own service and Warner Media claims they'll have a Warner Archive/Criterion channel in whatever monstrosity they hobble together to battle Netflix. It's been a wonderful two years, you could basically pick any given film out of a hat and be satisfied with a truly great piece of cinema you'd never heard of. Filmstruck didn't have a bunch of Z list schlock to pad its numbers like Amazon and Netflix, just the best of the Golden Age of Hollywood and a smattering of foreign and indie classics. You could listen to audio commentaries, disc extras, originally produced extras, host intros, director, actor and even cinematographer retrospectives. From high brow to low brow, they had art cinema, grindhouse cinema, and studio cinema. Each curated without prejudice.I loved being able to watch Zatoichi, Humphrey Bogart films, and random discoveries every day, but for now farewell Filmstruck. Hopefully next year it will be back, better than ever.Nothing can sum things up better than this final promo video via /r/movies https://ift.tt/2DPrFPR
